Opportunity is a circumstance or set of circumstances that allow for certain events or actions to occur. |
President Trump recently proposed a revised version of his original travel ban. This new, revised version targets six countries and claims that their refugees - if not already on their way over - are not allowed to come to the United States. Originally, the ban targeted Muslims specifically, but the ban has been rewritten to, as Trump claims, prevent terrorists from entering the United States. So far, Hawaii has filed a lawsuit against the revised order, claiming it is unconstitutional. A point that was brought up is that of the 82 terrorists that have attempted attacks since 2011, roughly half of them were born in America. Not only that, but the others came from twenty-six other countries, with the most being Pakistan (a country not on the ban).

This revised ban connects to the American ideal of opportunity because it is an example of opportunity being taken away from a certain group of people. The people who want to come to America from these six countries now have been stripped of the chance to. This is due to the generalization that was made that the citizens of these six countries are more likely to be terrorists, even though data shows otherwise. Therefore, not only does this revised travel ban take opportunity away from these refugees, it unjustly takes their opportunities.
